De-acidification is a process that helps to stabilize acidic paper that has a wood pulp content. There are two types of de-acidification that professional conservators employ, aqueous and non-aqueous. Non-aqueous treatment is the most commonly used and involves the application of one of several alkaline solutions on the market to the dry sheet of paper. We employ an aqueous treatment which involves emersion of the newspaper sheet in an alkaline based water bath. The aqueous treat is more thorough and then allows us to flatten the paper in the drying process.
