Theatrum orbis terrarum or Theatre of the World was groundbreaking as the first attempt to comprehensively depict the entire known world, which Ortelius accomplished by compiling the resources and knowledge of Europe’s finest geographers, cartographers, and artists of the 16th century. The result is an astonishing atlas containing beautifully illuminated maps detailing every aspect of the then-known globe.

Produced during the age of exploration and discovery, the Atlas revealed secrets of previously uncharted lands, and today remains invaluable as a historical document offering insight into how the world was perceived and conceptualized in the 16th century. Theatre of the World is one of the most sought-after compendiums and a cornerstone of any cartographic collection.
