The Theater of The World, The New York Times Edition

Abraham Ortelius (1527—1598) came to prominence during the latter part of the 16th-century in Antwerp, Belgium. One of the great trading centers of Europe at the time, Antwerp proved to be fertile ground for the young Ortelius. First schooled by his father, he continued on his own and attained a masterful knowledge of mathematics and the sciences.

Abraham Ortelius traveled widely and developed an intense interest in cartography. He is among the most important of the Dutch cartographers, and is credited with publishing the first comprehensive world atlas. Known as Theatrum Orbis Terrarum or The Theater of The World, the atlas is a cornerstone of any cartographic collection. The world map is one the of most sought after of all world maps.

This New York Times edition highlights five of the rarest plates all with brilliant original color.

Established in 1999, Oppenheimer Editions has partnered with prestigious museums to make prints from their holdings. Works from the New-York Historical Society’s unrivaled collections of John James Audubon’s watercolors and the Hudson River School paintings are examples of art that otherwise would be unobtainable. Among the institutional collections we have partnered with are the American Museum of Natural History, the Field Museum, and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. These are not mere reproductions. They are limited-edition fine art prints made with the finest quality archival pigments on rag watercolor paper and executed to exacting standards.
