Produced in complete fidelity to the original 16th-century atlas from Joel Oppenheimer’s personal collection, the Oppenheimer Editions Theatre of the World makes Ortelius’ historic maps available as modern prints. Printed with archival pigments on rag watercolor paper measuring 16 1/2″ x 21 1/4″, each map is individually numbered and embossed with our Oppenheimer Editions logo.

About Abraham Ortelius

Abraham Ortelius (1527—1598) came to prominence during the latter part of the 16th century in Antwerp, Belgium. One of the great trading centers of Europe at the time, Antwerp proved to be fertile ground for the young Ortelius. Abraham Ortelius traveled widely and developed an intense interest in cartography. He is among the most important Dutch cartographers and is credited with publishing the first comprehensive world atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum or The Theater of The World, which is a cornerstone of any cartographic collection.
