About A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body
Hailed as one of the most elegant anatomical works of the 19th century, Scottish surgeon John Lizars’ A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body contains 101 plates detailing various aspects of the human anatomy. The atlas was originally issued from 1822 to 1826, and printed by the surgeon’s brother, William Home Lizards, who famously engraved the initial plates of John James Audubon’s famed folio, The Birds of America.
Executed to exacting standards, the Oppenheimer Editions publication of John Lizars’ A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body offers all 101 detailed anatomical renderings as modern limited-edition fine art prints.
About John Lizars
John Lizars (1787—1860) was a Scottish surgeon, anatomist and medical author. After obtaining his MD from Edinburgh University, Lizars served as a surgeon in the Royal Navy off the coasts of Spain and Portugal during the Peninsular War. He later returned to Edinburgh University to teach anatomy and surgery at which time he produced A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body based on his dissections of the human body. In 1831 Lizars was elected Chair of Surgery to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. His contributions to medical discourse were significant and his publication A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body became a fundamental resource for medical students and doctors.
