Henry Mouzon’s most notable work is his 1775 map of the Carolinas titled An Accurate Map of North and South Carolina With Their Indian Frontiers which renders the region with such exacting detail that the map was used by major military commanders, including George Washington, during the American war for independence. The Oppenheimer Editions Mouzon Map is an exact facsimile of Mouzon’s original map in The Charleston Library Society’s collection. About Henry Mouzon
Henry Mouzon was a prominent militia officer, civil engineer, and cartographer whose most notable work was his map of the Carolinas titled An Accurate Map of North and South Carolina With Their Indian Frontiers. Published in 1775, on the eve of the war for independence, this map was a groundbreaking cartographic achievement and the “most widely consulted map of the area used in the war effort.” (Degrees of Latitude 209). A copy of Mouzon’s map was used by George Washington, the French commander, the Comte de Rochambeau, and British commander Sir Henry Clinton.
