About the Birds of Europe
First issued in 1832, John Gould’s folio, Birds of Europe, contains 448 hand-colored lithographs that depict the avifauna found throughout the European continent. Many of the plates were rendered by Gould’s wife Elizabeth, and by Edward Lear who regularly contributed to Gould’s publications. The antique original lithographs capture the delicacy of the bird’s form and the subtle texture of their plumage in a balanced, concise composition.
Our Oppenheimer Editions publication of John Gould’s Birds of Europe offers modern prints of this historic folio in a limited-edition of 500. First issued in 1832, John Gould’s folio, Birds of Europe, contains 448 hand-colored lithographs that depict the avifauna found throughout the European continent. Many of the plates were rendered by Gould’s wife Elizabeth, and by Edward Lear who regularly contributed to Gould’s publications. About John Gould
19th-century British artist John Gould enjoyed a prolific publishing career that lasted over half a century and oversaw the issuance of more than a dozen folios examining birds from all over the world. Gould recruited the talents of natural history illustrators including Edward Lear in order to create his luscious folios. Among Gould’s best-known folios are the monumental Family of Humming Birds, Birds of Europe, Birds of Great Britain, and the Family of Toucans.

Due to the depth of our inventory, some artwork may need to be conserved before it is shipped to you. This service is included with the purchase of every piece of antique artwork at Joel Oppenheimer, Inc. Original Audubon Octavos 1st Edition will be shipped in an archival rag board mat. Audubon 2nd edition Octavos are shipped as is.
